Hi there,

What pairs best with What Happens Next?

Action items – the accountability layer that turns clarity into execution.

⚡ Supercharge of the Week

Remote Octopus recommends pairing clear action items with What Happens Next at the end of every cross-functional sync.

A strong action item includes three elements: who is responsible, by when, and the specific details of the task. It is succinct and clear. Your conversation might have one action item or many.

Example in Action

Felix: By EOW, share draft project plan with Engineering via Slack channel #eng-ABC.

Wait, doesn’t AI do this now?

AI tools can surface potential action items. Human judgment ensures they’re clear, accountable, and aligned.

Four facilitation strategies to identify action items:

1️⃣ Listen for implicit commitments. This often sounds like someone casually mentioning something they plan to do.

If you hear: I need to email Carrie with the draft agenda later this week.

Then that might become ➡️ Claire: By EOW, email Carrie draft agenda for Project X.

2️⃣ Synthesize the discussion. Pause to confirm next steps.

You might say: Rishi, it sounds like we should coordinate with Legal, what might our next steps be?

3️⃣ Clarify and gather additional details. People might be discussing a task or action item, but the timeline or owner is unclear.

You might say: It sounds like we need to finalize the budget soon. I’m wondering if we have a target date or know who might be responsible?

4️⃣ Ask directly.

You might say: What’s our action item from this discussion?

Orientation aligns the team. Action items drive execution.

Keep things moving,

Claire Wescott
