Hi there,

Long projects don’t stall because teams lack talent.

They stall when momentum fades.

With three quarters left in the year, now is the time to be intentional about sustaining it.

⚡ Supercharge of the Week

Remote Octopus recommends emphasizing and celebrating key milestones with the team during long projects.

Consider the NBA season. It typically starts in October and the finals go into June – a 9 month project. And that doesn’t even include off-season practices and commitments.

How do the teams and players stay motivated for 9 months to win a championship banner? As Eddie House puts it:

Focus on winning one game at a time. Then do it again.

Focus on winning one quarter at a time. Then do it again.

Focus on winning 2 minutes at a time. Then do it again.

Breaking a 9-month season into quarters or minutes keeps players focused and engaged.

You can do the same thing as a project leader.

Consider a long-term project you’re leading right now. What short-term wins are clearly identified for the team?

Identify additional opportunities to celebrate success together. Clearly communicate these opportunities to the team and model your excitement as they approach.

Focus on winning one milestone at a time.

Then do it again.

Keep things moving,

Claire Wescott
