Hi there,

We’ve all been there.

On a team or a project call… and a cross-functional visitor shows up.

And we have no idea who they are or why they’re there.

And then they start to derail our entire meeting. 🧨

Don’t be that person.

⚡ Supercharge of the Week

Remote Octopus recommends clearly sharing your goal(s) for visiting a team or project call and ensuring you stick to those goals during the call itself.

Maybe you’re joining the call to listen in and learn more about a specific project. Or you might be there to observe how a different team runs their calls to bring back improvements for your own team.

🌟 Whatever the reason, these 3 steps will lead to a successful visit:

  1. Several days before the call, reach out to the call leader to ask about joining and share your goal(s). If you have any specific participation goals, such as wanting to dive deep into certain questions then share that in advance.

  2. At the top of the call, introduce yourself and your goal(s) for visiting.

  3. Follow those goal(s).

What does it mean to follow those goal(s)?

If you share that you’re hoping to listen and learn… then focus on listening and learning. Avoid launching into 1,245,987 questions. 🧨 If questions pop up for you, consider asking if there’s bandwidth to answer them on the call or if you should follow up async.

As a visitor, it’s critical to be respectful of the team’s time and expertise. And a quick follow up thank you note goes a long way to building cross-functional goodwill!
