Hi there,
Slack’s stated mission is to “make work life simpler, more pleasant and more productive.”
Do you know what is not simple, pleasant, or more productive?
Long Slack messages.
⚡ Supercharge of the Week
Remote Octopus recommends tailoring the length of your communication to the communication tool.
That’s a fancy way of saying: Keep your Slacks short.
Short Slacks will truly “make work life simpler, more pleasant and more productive.”
A Slack message should not take up an entire computer screen. End of story. (Especially if we’re talking about a 16.2 inch MacBook.)
🐢 Longer Slack messages will slow down your team. They will decrease productivity… and likely make a lot of people very annoyed. Slack messages can also be challenging from a documentation and search perspective (yes, sometimes even with Glean).
If you have a longer message to share with your team, ask Claude to tighten it up for you into a few sentences and then share that (much shorter) message in Slack. Or consider dropping it into a Google Doc or Confluence page.
Every now and then will you accidentally post a long Slack message? Sure, it happens to the best of us.
But longer Slack messages should be an exception, not the rule.
