Hi there,
Have you ever hopped onto a department call…
And someone starts presenting about your project…
But they call your project team a different name?!
And the stats are… where did they even get those numbers?!
Does my team have a new name now?! 😵💫
But there are 30 or 300 other people on the call and you’re not quite sure what to do…
⚡ Supercharge of the Week
Remote Octopus recommends getting a quick sign off from the project team for any slides that will be presented on a larger department or org call.
Why?
There is nothing quite WTF-inducing as hearing an update about your project during an org-wide call at the same time as all 300 of your colleagues.
Depending on the size of your team or company, different meetings might include updates about specific projects. Sometimes these updates are led by the project leader – but sometimes they’re led by the project approver, department leader, or a SME on the project team.
Sometimes they’re led by you!
This is not the time to freestyle that new project name you’ve been pushing for… or to pull data randomly because your manager says: Add in some numbers.
This is definitely not the time to forget key deliverables of the project at the risk of isolating your team members.
⏰ What is it time for?
Draft a slide – or two or three.
Then drop it into a team Slack for their preview or sign off. Emphasize that there’s not bandwidth for huge edits but to flag any questions or concerns.
EXAMPLE IN ACTION
Hi team – I’m leading a two-slide project update on our X department call this Thursday. Drafted these based on our project plan. Can you take a look by 5 pm ET tomorrow & tag any high-level questions or concerns? Excited to share everything we’ve been working on!
With this one quick question, you’ll build psychological safety. You’ll empower your project team with seeing the slides in advance. And you’ll avoid any WTF-inducing moments for them on the department call.
A win-win-win.
