Hi there,

Just a few minutes!

It’s never actually a few minutes.

… But how long will it be?

Are you feeling the crunch of remote, cross-functional collaboration? Drop a question here. Your questions will guide future newsletter topics & deliver recommendations straight to your inbox. 📬

⚡ Supercharge of the Week

Remote Octopus recommends clearly communicating the length of time a task will take with cross-functional colleagues while avoiding vague expressions.

When we use vague expressions, we are communicating ineffectively. 50% of remote workers indicate that ineffective communication negatively impacts their job satisfaction!

What are some example vague expressions?

  • Just a few minutes!

  • I’ll get to it right away.

  • Let’s circle back later.

  • It’s on my radar.

What should we say instead?

Anchor cross-functional communication in specificity, especially when communicating the length a time a task will take or discussing project timelines. Share specific dates, times, and time zones to provide clarity and streamline cross-functional collaboration.

Even a simple phrase like end of day can be vague – end of day where? In which time zone? With global colleagues and flexible working hours, it’s impossible to know for sure.

EXAMPLE IN ACTION

Instead of: Yes, I can make that edit now. Just a few minutes.

Try: Yes, I can make that edit and circle back by 12 noon ET once it’s all set.

EXAMPLE IN ACTION

Instead of: Yes, I’ll get the email drafted right away.

Try: Yes, I’ll draft the email today & circle back on Slack by 5 pm ET today once it’s all set.

EXAMPLE IN ACTION

Instead of: I’m swamped right now. Let’s circle back later on that deck.

Try: I’m swamped right now. Can I circle back with you on Monday about that deck?

Your increased specificity will keep cross-functional collaboration zooming forward!
