When we’re collaborating remotely, it often feels efficient and easy to anchor all of our conversations in our own needs. I need this from you…
Remote Octopus recommends identifying opportunities where you can leverage the word we as a strategy to demonstrate that everyone in the conversation is equally engaged. Anchoring conversations in we highlights the impact on the team and the company – instead of highlighting the impact only on you personally.
Examples in Action:
Instead of: I can never get a hold of you on Slack.
Try: Let’s chat about how we can collaborate more efficiently together on Slack.
Instead of: I’m going to kick off the retrospective for my project with a quick overview of the data I gathered on its impact.
Try: Let’s kick off the retrospective for our project with an overview of our impact data.
Consider: It’s all about balance. I statements also carry value at work, especially in clarifying responsibilities or sharing emotions.
Spend a few minutes reflecting on when you might benefit from using we instead of I during an upcoming conversation. Test it out… and hopefully we’ll be supercharging our remote collaboration together!
